Before Morning.

The quiet work that happens before anyone notices. The studio's point of view runs through everything Nick French makes, from software and systems to physical objects.

Design principles

Everything has a reason. Nothing is ornamental.

These apply the same way to a hoodie, a website, an email, a dashboard, or a room. Different outputs, one mind behind them.

01
Reveal, don't announce.
Objects invite discovery instead of demanding attention. The work should be recognizable before the name is.
02
Evidence over explanation.
Show the notebook. Don't tell me the person is thoughtful. Proof is quieter and more convincing than a claim.
03
Objects are tools.
Beauty comes from use, not decoration. If it doesn't earn its keep in the hand, it doesn't belong.
04
Quiet confidence.
Never perform expertise. The work carries the weight so the words don't have to.
05
Patina beats perfection.
Wear is desirable. A thing that shows its use has earned its character.
06
One warm light.
Emotion comes from lighting, not effects. Warmth is a decision, not an accident.
07
Meaningful restraint.
Remove until removing more would reduce meaning. Then stop.

The test for anything that leaves the studio is simple: could someone recognize it as mine if my name were removed? If not, it isn't finished.
